Anyone can upload files to the website, which lets companies transfer information on oil and water wells to the department, according to the Dispatch. The site was not hacked, according to Eileen Corson, a spokeswoman for ODNR.

She said that the government removed the files and will require that companies obtain credentials before uploading information in the future.

"Someone was using it as cloud storage," Corson told the Dispatch. "Unfortunately, that happens."

On Saturday Rep. John Patrick Carney called for an investigation into the incident, according to the Dispatch.

"It is important that State government networks not be abused for personal use, especially for storing unauthorized or pirated files that expose them to malware and viruses," Carney said in a statement. "The State Auditor should determine whether appropriate policies were in place, whether they were being enforced, and whether the full extent of the problem has been identified and corrected."
