Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s (D) attempt at a political comeback has solid support from the Democratic voters he needs to win over, according to a poll released Wednesday.

The NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll found that Spitzer has the support of 42 percent of Democrats in the race to be New York City’s next comptroller. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Spitzer’s potential foe in the race, trailed with the support of 33 percent of NYC Democrats.

Spitzer, who resigned as governor in 2008 amid a prostitution scandal, has until Thursday to round up the 3,750 signatures necessary to secure a spot on the ballot — a tall order for a campaign that only launched on Sunday.
