A poll released Thursday showed that Republicans are opposed to providing a path to citizenship for undocumented workers living in the United States, until they learn exactly what the proposal entails.

The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found a slight majority of 51 percent of Republicans nationwide opposed to the measure, long derided as “amnesty” by many on the right. But their feelings change dramatically when they learn what’s included in the proposal.

Upon being told that immigrants must pay fines, back taxes and pass a security background check in order to earn a path to citizenship, the poll showed that nearly three-quarters of Republicans — 73 percent — suddenly supported the measure.

The poll also showed a majority of Americans either strongly in favor or somewhat in favor of a path to citizenship — both before and after they were told about the provisions associated with the idea.
