Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) has yet to decide if he will seek another term in New Jersey’s 2014 U.S. Senate race, but a poll released Thurday indicated that Democratic voters in the Garden State would rather see a high-profile potential challenger in office than the 88-year-old incumbent.

According to the latest poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University, 42 percent of self-identified Democrats would like to see Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker elected to the Senate if “a Democrat were to win,” while just 20 percent prefer Lautenberg.

Booker has not met with Lautenberg since announcing his intention to run last month. Earlier this week, the popular mayor said he intends to give Lautenberg “the space to make his own decision,” adding that the five-term senator has been in office “for a long time.”
