The election is still more than a year away, but a poll released Tuesday could give Liz Cheney reason to fret.

According to the latest survey from Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling, 54 percent of Wyoming Republicans prefer Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) over Cheney in next year’s Senate primary. Only 26 percent said they will vote for Cheney, making it the second poll in a week to show the incumbent with a wide lead among Cowboy State primary voters.

PPP also found Cheney trailing by three points in a hypothetical general election against former Gov. Dave Freudenthal (D), although she topped Democratic businessman Gary Trauner by 18 points. Enzi claimed a 23-point lead over Freudenthal, and a massive 47-point lead over Trauner.

Half of voters overall do not consider Cheney, who until recently was a resident of Virginia, to be a Wyomingite, according to PPP. A plurality of 43 percent said they have an unfavorable opinion of Cheney. By contrast, her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has a favorability rating of 54 percent.
