A proposition to repeal the death penality in California leads for the first time, according to a survey from Field Poll released Friday. Forty-five percent of the 751 likely voters surveyed said they would vote for Proposition 34, which would ban the death penalty, while 38 percent said they opposed the measure.
The numbers represent a stark shift from the previous Field Poll conducted in mid-September, which showed support at 42 percent and opposition at 45 percent. The PollTracker average now shows the measure ahead for the first time, with support at 44.3 percent and opposition at 40.3 percent.
The Field Poll used 751 live telephone interviews with likely California voters conducted Oct. 25-30. It has a sampling error of 3.6 percent.
