House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, left, joined by House Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., takes reporters' questions, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, as House Republicans signaled support for a budget deal worked out yesterday between Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chair Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. The budget deal was one of a few major measures left on Congress' to-do list near the end of a bruising year that has produced a partial government shutdown, a flirtation with a first-ever federal default and gridlock on President Obama's agenda. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) declared his distaste for the smoking habit of House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) in an interview published Thursday.

“I try to sit as far away from him as I can in meetings that I know are going to be stressful,” Ryan told Time magazine.

“I just hate getting that smell in my clothes,” he added.

Most of the Q&A is behind a paywall, but Political Wire highlighted Ryan’s the dig at the speaker’s well-publicized habit.

  1. Something I agree with Ryan on, cigarettes do smell horrid.

Edit: I wonder if Boehner smokes during the meetings or is Ryan just talking about the smell that wafts from his clothes?

… but when he gets up in the morning reeking of Boehner’s cheap cologne & sweat … that is just unbearable!

  3. The carpet burns on his knees, however, are not a problem.

  4. Since Ryan says he hates getting the smell in his clothes, it sounds like Boehner does smoke during meetings.

Good thing for Ryan that he didn’t come along when politics was all about smoke-filled rooms, huh? What a little priss pot. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, too, and I hated getting it in my hair and my clothes in my freshman history class when I was in college, but I’d never make a public remark against a particular smoker, particularly a remark that was for the record.

  5. Why this important story isn’t given more prominence on TPM’s website is beyond me.
