Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) accused Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) of funding his presidential campaign with Wall Street money in a strange new animated web ad released Monday.
In the video, a cartoon man and woman stand in a wooded clearing discussing Cruz’s finances in halting British accents. The woman claims that the Texas senator took “millions” in funding from special interests and finance firms like Golden Sachs.
The stilted speech and crude animation evoke Xtranormal, a defunct text-to-video site popular in the early 2010s.
The Washington Post reported that Paul’s campaign released the video to anchor “Audit The Ted,” a new micro-site that attacks Cruz for missing a pre-State of the Union vote on Paul’s bill to investigate the Federal Reserve.
In the ad, the woman says Cruz was “too busy campaigning” to show up for a vote on an issue he’s long claimed to support.
The ad also called Cruz out for failing to properly disclose a large loan from Goldman Sachs, his wife’s employer, during his 2012 Senate run.
“Does the Goldman Sachs want to audit the Fed?” the male character asks.
“I don’t think so,” the woman answers. “They are the Fed.”
