Police say an Ohio teenager accidentally shot herself and her father Tuesday night while learning how to use a gun.

The Dayton Daily News reported that the incident happened while the girl, 14, and her father, 42, were on the back deck of their Vandalia, Ohio home.

Police said the teen suffered a gunshot wound to the upper leg and was transported to a local hospital. Her father suffered a superficial wound to the leg and was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

The father had been showing his daughter how to shoot a 9mm handgun, according to Vandalia police Sgt. Gary Jackson. He said the teen fired one successful shot, but the gun unexpectedly discharged a round the second time her finger touched the trigger.
