President Obama called the deadly attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya the work of “extemists,” saying that the late Ambassador Christopher Stevens was a popular figure there for his work helping liberate the country from Muammar Gaddhafi.
“This is a guy who was actually beloved by the vast majority of Libyans,” Obama told David Letterman on Wednesday. “And these extremists do not represent what the Libyan people think.”
Obama noted that Libyans within the country and around the world, including in Washington, held vigils mourning Stevens’ death last week.
