President Barack Obama said Wednesday in Berlin that the existence of nuclear weapons precludes the world from ever achieving total safety.

Speaking at the Brandenburg Gate, Obama invoked the legacy of John F. Kennedy. Kennedy gave a landmark speech in the same place 50 years ago.

“And if we lift our eyes, as President Kennedy called us to do, then we’ll recognize that our work is not yet done, for we are not only citizens of America or Germany, we are also citizens of the world and our fates and fortunes are linked like never before,” Obama said. “We may no longer live in fear of global annihilation, but so long as nuclear weapons exist, we are not truly safe.”

Obama is using the speech to call for a new round of nuclear arms reductions.
