President Barack Obama on Thursday praised the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold nationwide tax subsidies under the Affordable Care Act as a “victory” for the American people.
“The Affordable Care Act is here to stay,” Obama said in a statement delivered from the White House Rose Garden.
The President noted that the health care law has now survived more than 50 repeal votes in Congress and multiple legal challenges at the level of Supreme Court. Obama argued the law has been working beyond expectations and is now more than a mere “political football.”
“The point is, this is not an abstract thing anymore,” he said. “This is not a set of political talking points. This is reality. We can see how it is working. This law is working exactly as it’s supposed to.”
Obama acknowledged there was room to further improve the health care law and vowed to continue trying to convince state legislatures and governors to expand Medicaid coverage for their constituents.
“So this was a good day for America,” he concluded. “Let’s get back to work.”
