President Barack Obama warned all parties in Egypt to “show restraint” Monday amid massive protests against President Mohamed Morisi.

“Everybody has to show restraint,” Obama said at a press conference in Tanzania during his Africa trip, according to AFP. “For those who are participating in these protests or marches, assaulting women does not qualify as peaceful protests”.

Earlier Monday, Egypt’s military gave an ultimatum to Morsi, who was democratically elected a year ago, and said that if he and his opponents do not reach an agreement in 48 hours it will intervene and lay out a political plan for the country.

Obama did not comment on whether he thought it was time for Morsi to step down.

“What is clear right now is that although Mr. Morsi was elected democratically, there is more work to be done to create the conditions in which everybody feels their voices are heard,” Obama said at the press conference.
