President Obama criticized Mitt Romney’s economic proposals by invoking the legacy of the George W. Bush years, and by contrast invoked the Bill Clinton years for his own proposals.

“Math, common sense, and our history shows us that is not a recipe for job growth. We have tried both approaches. The approach that Gov. Romney is talking about is the same sales pitch that was made in 2001 and 2003. We ended up with the slowest job growth and 50 years. We ended up living from surplus to deficits. It culminated in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

“And Bill Clinton tried the same approach I’m talking about — and we created 23 million new jobs, went from deficit to surplus, and businesses did well. In some ways, we have some data on which approach is more likely to create jobs and opportunity for Americans.”
