President Obama will be returning from Hawaii on Wednesday night, the White House announced, cutting his holiday vacation short in order to address so-called fiscal cliff negotiations in search of a deal to avert automatic spending cuts and tax increases on January 1 in Washington.
The First Family has been vacationing with friends and family in Hawaii for Christmas, with the president taking time to hit the beach, play golf, visit his grandfather’s grave and visit troops at a Marine Corps base. The First Lady and the First Daughters will remain in Hawaii.
The Senate is expected to return on Thursday, and while the House of Representatives is also expected to return this week, no official date has been set.
Obama met with both House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) at the White House on Friday, before delivering brief remarks to the press on the status of negotiations.
