President Barack Obama pauses as he speaks to the media about Ebola before leaving the White House en route to Wisconsin, Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington. The president said the US can't be seen as shying away from battle against Ebola. Obama did not directly criticize quarantine policies for returning health care workers implemented in New York and New Jersey. But he says the response to Ebola needs to be sensible and "based on science," while supporting health care workers going overseas to fight the disease. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) MORE LESS

In a statement from the White House on Wednesday morning, President Obama condemned the shooting at the Paris offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Obama stressed the strong relationship between France and the U.S. and promised to provide “any assistance” to track down and punish the gunmen responsible.

Read the President’s full statement:

I strongly condemn the horrific shooting at the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris that has reportedly killed 12 people. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this terrorist attack and the people of France at this difficult time. France is America’s oldest ally, and has stood shoulder to shoulder with the United States in the fight against terrorists who threaten our shared security and the world. Time and again, the French people have stood up for the universal values that generations of our people have defended. France, and the great city of Paris where this outrageous attack took place, offer the world a timeless example that will endure well beyond the hateful vision of these killers. We are in touch with French officials and I have directed my Administration to provide any assistance needed to help bring these terrorists to justice.

  1. Do we as a nation really need to come out with a statement on this attack in Paris? I’m sick & tired of US Presidents (Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Baby Bush, and now Obama) being the big cop for the world! Give me a break…the French won’t need our help to bring justice to the perpetrators.

More and more I wish Obama would just put a sock in it. The dude thinks he needs to lecture everyone. What he needs to do is get back to creating and leading on policies that rebuild the middle class and end the government handouts to the rich and corporations! Stop all the BS rhetoric and LEAD…lead us away from the broken Republican Reagonomic agenda!
