President Barack Obama announced that the United States would be providing an additional $340 million in humanitarian aid to Syria in the aftermath of a bloody civil war resulting in tens of thousands of dead and millions more refugees.

Total U.S. funding for humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people, including food, clean water, shelter, medical care and relief supplies now stands at nearly $1.4 billion since the crisis began, according to the White House.
