The New York Police Department collected information about New Jersey and Long Island mosques as part of its efforts to build databases of where Muslims work, shop and pray, the Associated Press reports.

Newark Mayor Corey Booker says he didn’t even know of the operation. “Wow,” Booker told the AP upon hearing the news. “This raises a number of concerns. It’s just very, very sobering.”

Former Newark police chief Gary McCarthy refused to comment on his reported decision to allow the NYPD officers to monitor his city’s Muslim neighborhoods.
