The National Rifle Association is running an ad in New Hampshire in support of Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), who has taken a heat in the past few weeks for voting against the Manchin-Toomey background check compromise.

The new ad portrays Ayotte as a supporter of sensible gun regulations and improving the mental health system. The ad doesn’t mention the National Rifle Association except in text at the end noting that “The New Hampshire men and women of the National Rifle Association are responsible for content of this advertising.”

“See this TV ad paid for by New York city Mayor Michael Bloomberg,” a voice says in the ad. “Don’t believe it. Kelly Ayotte voted for a bipartisan plan for effective background checks.”

The narrator continues: “Ayotte voted for a bipartisan plan to reform our broken mental health system. Ayotte voted for more resources to prosecute criminals who use guns. Kelly Ayotte stands with prosecutors and police for New Hampshire values.”

The NRA has put $25,000 behind the ad, which will run on New Hampshire’s WMUR for at least two weeks.
