Vance County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Kittrell, N.C. at about 7 p.m., according to WRAL. Investigators said Lloyd Woodlief, 84, had shot his 49-year-old son with a .22-caliber pistol. Woodlief was then shot once by his grandson with a 12-gauge shotgun, they said.
Deputies determined that Lloyd Woodlief died a short time after being shot and his son, Lloyd Peyton Woodlief, was taken to a local medical center for treatment.
The investigation was ongoing and charges were pending, according to WRAL.
