North Carolina state House Speaker Thom Tillis formally announced his candidacy for Senate on Friday, potentially facing off against incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in the general election.
Tillis, who is credited with helping the GOP take over the state legislature in 2010, is one of the party’s top prospects to take down Hagan, according to Politico. There are a number of Republican pols also considering a run, so the match up is far from a done deal.
A poll last week from the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling found Hagan leading Tillis in a hypothetical race, 48 to 41 percent.
