A noose was reportedly found hanging from a tree at Duke University’s student center on Wednesday morning, sparking outrage across the campus and on social media.

“I can’t begin to describe the disgust and anger I felt, and still feel,” Vice President of Student Affairs Larry Moneta wrote in an email sent to the student body, the Tennessean newspaper reported on Wednesday.

“Though it has since been removed, the photos are everywhere and its hateful message will sadly pervade and persist for a long time.”

The university is investigating the incident, according to the paper.

The Tennessean report, written by a college correspondent attending Duke, wrote that the noose was found only two weeks after a black student alleged that she was harassed by a group of white men on campus chanting racial epithets.
