The price of the Nokia Lumia 900 smartphone has been cut in half to $49.99, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday. The smartphone, which made its debut in April at AT&T stores to rave reviews, was positioned as something of a comeback for Nokia and Microsoft, which makes the Windows Phone 7.5 software operating system that runs the device. Both companies are lagging badly in the smartphone wars against Apple’s iPhone and Google Android devices by other manufacturers.

Nokia declined to specify how many Nokia Lumia 900 devices it has sold, but recent analyst reports put the number at around 300,000 a dismal amount compared to the 4 million some iPhone 4S devices that Apple sold in its first weekend of the device’s release in October.

Microsoft recently announced that the Lumia 900 would not be upgradable to the upcoming new version of its operating system, Windows Phone 8, due out in the fall.
