Newt Gingrich’s attacks on Bain Capital in the GOP primary made President Obama look tame. Now the former Speaker says Obama is making a terrible mistake my going the same route.
“I think it’s perfectly reasonable for the news media, the president, anybody who wants to to look at Bain Capital,” Gingrich told CNN’s Piers Morgan. “What I’m reporting to you is, having lived through it, it doesn’t work very effectively and it sure doesn’t work very effectively if you’re the president with the worst unemployment record since the Great Depression.”
Gingrich praised Newark mayor Cory Booker, both for his public service and his comment that attacks on Bain were “nauseating,” saying he assumed Booker was motivated by his city’s proximity to Wall Street. He said such splits were indicative of voters’ general discomfort going after an individual company.
“One of the things we discovered we could never make clear an attack on a particular case and Romney’s ability to say no, this is about free enterprise,” Gingrich said. “And the average American looked up and said, you know, it’s about free enterprise.”
During the primary campaign, Gingrich said Romney should “give back all the money he’s earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years at Bain.”
