Republicans are making a bold play for a U.S. Senate seat in Oregon, a reliably Democratic state that hasn't elected a Republican to a statewide office in more than a decade. Republicans think they've found the right candidate in Wehby, a children's brain surgeon who's raised more than $1 million and put her early opposition to the president's health law at the center of her campaign to help her party regain a Senate majority. Dr. Monica Wehby won the Republican Senate nomination in Oregon and will face Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) in the general election.

Wehby, a pediatric neurosurgeon, won the nomination shortly after polls closed in the primary on Tuesday night. She was projected the winner shortly after polls closed by Oregon’s KPTV.

Wehby has been making headlines lately for a pair of separate police reports. One of those reports said Wehby’s ex-boyfriend accused her of harassment while another said her ex-husband accused her of ongoing harassment as well.

Oregon mandates votes to be submitted by mail, so some speculate that the late-breaking news may have had little effect on the primary.
