Passengers on a New York City subway car confronted an off-duty police officer who allegedly assaulted an on-duty subway employee before fleeing the scene, according to the New York Daily News.

New York City police officer Mirjan Lolja allegedly tackled and choked a 28-year-old female subway worker at a Bronx subway station at about 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 23, the Daily News reported last week.

In an article on Sunday, the News reported that the attack only stopped when a train pulled into the station. The off-duty cop then tried to jump into the train to get away, but the passengers chased him off, according to the newspaper.

The victim pleaded to her fellow worker on the train to keep it in place until her assailant ran off the car and out of the station.

“I believe the only thing that saved me was the train coming into the station,” the conductor, who has remained anonymous, told the paper.

The cop turned himself in on Friday, according to the paper.

“I’m totally outraged,” the chairman of Transport Workers Union Local 100 told the Daily News. “We’re not safe with members of the public, and now we’re not safe from the police.”
