Republican presidential candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee took something of a victory lap on Wednesday after reports that the pope had met with defiant Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis.

Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, has been one of the biggest supporters of Davis, who was jailed on contempt of court after defying a judge’s orders to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

On Wednesday, the New York Times reported that the Vatican confirmed Pope Francis met privately with Davis during his visit to the U.S. last week.

Huckabee weighed in on social media Wednesday:

I am not surprised that Mike Huckabee would try to turn this into a victory lap for himself. However, if the Pope in fact invited Kim Davis to a meeting, I am extremely disappointed. I’m not a Pollyanna and understand that the Pope represents a still very conservative church. But there are so many individuals and groups more deserving of an audience than Kim Davis - the kind of attention-seeking “Christian” the Bible (and I thought the Pope) disclaims.

  4. Who gives a flying fuck?! The catholic church is clear on their position regarding gay marriage, so why should it be a surprise that the pope met with Davis. And if you are going to celebrate that on the right, then why isn’t the right celebrating the pope’s PUBLIC statements regarding climate change and unfettered capitalism? By the way, the fact that Davis met with the pope does not change the fact that she is using her government position to endorse a specific religion, a clear violation of her oath of office.

  5. Huh…so Papa Francesco is a ‘socialist’ right up until he meets with Kim Davis? The HUCKster really is nothing but a big ol’ fraud.
