The 2-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy accidentally fired his father’s gun on Monday inside a Wendy’s restaurant in Middleburg, Fla., injuring himself and three others, the Florida Times-Union newspaper reported.

The bullet hit the floor before fragments bounced off and struck the 2-year-old in the foot, the newspaper reported. The boy’s grandfather and two nearby female customers were also hit with fragments. According to a sheriff’s office report obtained by the Times-Union, nobody required medical treatment but the four were examined by local emergency crews.

As stated in the report, the dad, Sgt. Matthew Magish, was standing in line inside the Wendy’s when the misfire occurred. Magish had a personal semiautomatic pistol inside the pocket of his pants that went off when, as he said in the report, his son “stuck his hand into his pocket looking for a snack.”

According to the Times-Union, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, Mary Justino, said Magish will remain on duty as an investigation into the accident continues.

Wait, was he a good cop with a gun or a bad cop with a gun?

If there had only been a few other 2 year olds with guns, maybe they could have prevented this.

  3. Wendy’s. Now offering bullet fragments on their burgers. FREE!

  5. This is one of the things that worries me when these guys walk around with their rifles slung on their back or with a gun carelessly stored in their pocket when inside buildings, businesses, and public spaces. They get distracted for a moment, a child reaches up to touch the gun, and boom. Honestly, I can’t understand why so many businesses are indifferent when it comes to allowing guns in their stores. It seems like they are opening themselves to lawsuits and PR nightmares. Also, that guy was a Cop for goodness sake. He should know better. One hopes he is reprimanded for his negligence.
