In a pretty dramatic turnabout, Michael Sam’s father now says he has no qualms with his son’s coming out.

No, Michael Sam Sr. claimed in an interview with the Galveston Daily News, he never described himself as “old school” and “a man-and-a-woman type of guy.”

The elder Sam said he was “terribly misquoted” by the New York Times in a story that ran earlier this week after his son, an All-American defensive end at Missouri, announced that he is gay.

The Times also quoted Michael Sam Sr. as saying he doesn’t want his “grandkids raised in that kind of environment.”

“I did not say anything about my grandkids,” he said, as quoted by ESPN.

After thinking it over, the elder Sam said he believes his son did the right thing.

The Times told the Daily News that it quoted Sam Sr. “accurately and fairly.”
