After suggesting presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump would sue the New York Times over its story about his private interactions with women, a lawyer for the billionaire walked back that threat on Tuesday.
Michael Cohen, general counsel for the Trump Organization, acknowledged in an interview on CNN that there’s a “very high bar” for suing media companies after another lawyer suggested a possible lawsuit the day before.
“I don’t think that this is going to end up in litigation. The truth is that The New York Times owes both Ms. Brewer and they owe Donald Trump an apology,” Cohen said.
The front-page story detailed years of Trump’s unnerving interactions with women based on dozens of interviews. Rowanne Brewer Lane, Trump’s former girlfriend, said the Times “spun” her comments in the story.
On Sunday, Trump slammed the report on Twitter as a “lame hit piece” from the “TOTALLY dishonest” media.
