Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) plans to write a book to “tell the whole story” about her re-election bid against Todd Akin, who sunk his campaign with his infamous comment about “legitimate rape,” the senator announced Wednesday on the local radio program “Allman in the Morning.”
“People are telling me not to do it,” McCaskill told host Jamie Allman. “But it was just so interesting and I think people need to understand that some of the extreme elements in this country on both ends of the spectrum are not politically viable.”
“We did help, I think, Todd Akin get nominated,” McCaskill said. Her campaign did some “cold calculation” about who would be the best person to run against and found Akin had “the most liabilities.” McCaskill promised to share what they did to help Akin win the primary in the book, but said getting Democrats to vote in the primary was not part of the effort.
McCaskill said that St. Louis businessman John Brunner would have been the strongest candidate because he had an “unlimited checkbook.”
