Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said Thursday that while she respects that The Guardian has revealed details of top secret National Security Agency surveillance programs, she believes the British newspaper’s coverage has been colored by “an agenda.”

McCaskill expressed a desire to ensure transparency without compromising the efectiveness of the programs.

“I think The Guardian has an agenda,” she told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I respect the fact that The Guardian is putting this information out there and it’s been leaked. I get that’s a role of journalism. But at the same time there’s been an awful lot of distortion around the facts of this information that’s come to light and an awful lot of context that’s been missing.”

A spokesperson for The Guardian told the Huffington Post on Friday said the outlet was “very disappointed” in McCaskill’s comments.
