Invoking the Paris terror attacks, House lawmakers pushed toward a vote Tuesday on legislation tightening controls on travel to the U.S. and requiring visas for anyone who's been in Iraq or Syria in the previous five years. "You have more than 5,000 individuals that have Western passports in this program that have gone to Iraq or Syria in the last five years," said McCarthy. "Those are gaps that we need to fix." Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy blasted Obama Tuesday night for saying that the Islamic Sate did not “threaten our national existence.”

“National Security is the number one issue, and I think he is in a different place than the rest of the country,” McCarthy told reporters after the President’s address. “From Paris to San Bernardino to Philadelphia to Istanbul this morning to our own Navy being taken from Iran, and he talks about us being the strongest we’ve ever been. I feel there is a greater threat out there.”

McCarthy argued that America needed to “take a stronger approach” in how it addresses issues related to national security or risk putting the safety of the country in jeopardy.

McCarthy also said that the U.S. has to “have some action back” against Iran after the country took 10 U.S. Navy personnel into custody Tuesday.

“I view foreign policy much different than how he delivered it, and I think the American people do as well,” McCarthy said.
