Chris Christie shouldn’t be written off just yet, according to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

While the governor of New Jersey must continue working to get the George Washington Bridge scandal “behind him,” he still has a fighting chance, the Arizona Republican told TIME in an interview published Sunday.

“I think he’s still a very viable candidate,” McCain said. “I do believe that obviously he has to get this issue behind him. I think he’s handled it quite well.”

While no evidence has emerged that Christie was personally involved in shutting down lanes at the George Washington bridge, documents released last week show that key players close to his administration joked about causing “traffic problems,” only this time in front of the house of a New Jersey rabbi.
