Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) used his Twitter account Wednesday to comment on the deteriorating situation in Egypt, indicating that recent comments by Secretary of State John Kerry compounded matters.

During a visit to Egypt last week, McCain and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) warned that the country was on the brink of unraveling. The Arizona Republican was criticizing Kerry for saying earlier this month that the Egyptian military was “restoring democracy.” Kerry subsequently walked back the comment after it was widely perceived as an expression of support for the military coup.

Reports out of Egypt on Wednesday indicated that dozens of people were killed in clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi. The carnage prompted the Egyptian  presidency to declare a monthlong state of emergency across the country.
