Massie was backed by tea party Senators Rand Paul of Kentucky and and Mike Lee of Utah while Webb-Edgington, the establishment pick, had the support of former Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning, who once held the 4th District seat, and Republican Rep. Geoff Davis, whose retirement makes this an open seat. The district is leans strongly Republican.
