Sen. Marco Rubio (R) struck a more moderate tone on abortion during Saturday’s Republican debate, acknowledging that there is a legitimate tension between the right of a woman to control her own body and the right of the unborn.

He said that a woman has “a real right” to “choose what to do with her body,” but that that right was trumped by the right of the unborn child to live.

“On the issue of life, to me, the issue of life is not a political issue. It’s a human rights issue. It puts in conflict two competing rights. On the one hand is the right of a woman to choose what to do with her body, which is a real right. And on the other hand is the right of an unborn human child to live,” Rubio said.

The freshman senator said the rights were in conflict, but he stays with traditional Republican values.

“And they’re in conflict. As a policymaker, I must choose. I have chosen to err on the side of life,” he added.
