Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Pat Toomey (R-PA) said Sunday that they are close to having enough votes for their background check compromise but that they are still working to get more of their colleagues to support the proposal.
“Well we’re close,” Manchin said on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” appearing with Toomey. “We need more.”
“We’re close, we’re working it, we’re discussing with colleagues on both sides,” Toomey added. “We’ve got bipartisan support but there’s bipartisan opposition.”
Toomey declined to name Republicans whom he is counting on to vote for their proposal.
“We have others that we’re confident about, I’m not sure they’ve announced it so I don’t want to announce it,” Toomey said.
They did praise Republican colleague Sen. Susan Collins of Maine for publicly supporting the compromise on Saturday night.
