An Ohio man that shot himself in the arm last week made up a story about a fake robbery to conceal that it was an accidental shooting, police told the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Thursday.

The 27-year-old initially told authorities that a man wearing a ski mask shot him in the arm while attempting a robbery. After police officers followed up with inconsistencies in his account, the man confessed. The gun went off when the man attempted to remove it from a car trunk.

The man was arrested and charged with “inducing panic,” according to the Plain Dealer.
