A man in Sullivan City, Texas, was charged with manslaughter on Tuesday after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the face, according to what officials told The Monitor. She died of her injuries.

The shooting occurred Friday night. When police responded they allegedly found 27-year-old Frederico Cantu dragging his girlfriend, 25-year-old Viridiana Hernandez, out of their home, according to a police news release that the paper obtained.

According to the Monitor, during interviews with law enforcement, Cantu’s accounts of the shooting were inconsistent, but he eventually admitted to accidentally shooting Hernandez while cleaning his gun.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, which the paper reported was called in to assist Sullivan City police with their investigation, found a semi-automatic handgun along with drugs and money.

Sheriff’s spokesperson JP Rodriguez told television station KVEO that once the investigation was handed over to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, Cantu allegedly became less cooperative.

“We have had limited cooperation from Mr. Cantu,” Rodriguez said. “Based on the results of the autopsy, based on evidence that was at the scene we’ve established enough probable cause to charge him with recklessly causing her death.”

Hernandez was taken to a nearby hospital after the shooting where she eventually died.
