A Mobile, Ala. man was arrested on Wednesday after he tried to exact revenge against a family member he felt was responsible for the death of his 7-year-old stepson, who accidentally shot himself in the head, police told Alabama Media.
Kenneth Kendrick Sims was charged with second-degree assault after he injured three people while looking for the family member he believed left the gun in the home where his stepson accidentally shot himself, according to police.
On Wednesday morning, 7-year-old J’Daun Hill accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun he found in the home, which was hidden in a place a family member believed was safe, police told Alabama Media.
Police then responded to a call later on Wednesday, where Sims reportedly entered the home in which Hill shot himself with a knife and gun.
“He said he was looking for a specific family member who he felt was responsible for J’Daun’s death,” local police spokeswoman Ashley Rains told Alabama Media.
Two family members sustained minor injuries while trying to get Sims out of the home, police said.
Once Sims was outside, he reportedly fired two shots from his gun, and a third person sustained a minor injury, according to Alabama Media.
Police have not yet determined whether Sims will face additional charges.
