Rep. Mike Michaud (D-ME) has filed papers with the Maine Secretary of State’s office, to run for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Michaud’s campaign director Greg Olson told TPM that the Congressman is not yet definitively running, but is filing paperwork and collecting signatures in order to be prepared: “As you probably know, we have a very tight deadline, and if we did not collect signatures, it would leave him without the option to run.”

The deadline for candidates to file, in the wake of Snowe’s surprise announcement on Tuesday, is in only just over two weeks’ time, on March 15.

Michaud’s filing with the state was first reported by the Bangor Daily News.
