Louisiana made nearly $2 million in Medicaid payments to provide health coverage to people who were actually dead, according to the Times-Picayune.

The legislative auditor determined that the state health department paid $1.9 million to health care companies for 1,700 deceased people enrolled in Medicaid from February 2012 to June 2013. The department said that it had relied on outdated information from the Social Security Administration, which led to the erroneous payments, the newspaper reported.

The auditor said that the department should seek to recoup the payments and put procedures in place to ensure that the errors were not repeated.
