A Democratic candidate for district attorney in Harris County, Texas says domestic violence should be prosecuted less.
In an interview with the Texas Observer on Wednesday, the candidate, Lloyd Oliver, said that “family violence is so, so overrated.”
Oliver, 70, has been a criminal defense attorney for roughly 40 years, according to the Observer. He indicated that if he won his race he would move resources away from domestic violence to other issue areas.
In 2012 Oliver reportedly said that victims of domestic violence needed to “maybe learn how to box a little better.”
Oliver was asked to explain his remarks later on in that interview.
“There are some people — I don’t understand it — but part of their making love is to beat one another up first,” Oliver said. “Why do we want to get involved in people’s bedrooms?”
