Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, a political independent and former Republican, said Tuesday at the Democratic convention that millions of moderates, conservatives and independents like him have no place in a modern Republican Party that has walked away from fiscally conservative principles.
“Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan want to return us to the fantasy land of never having to pay for things we buy, such as education, medical research, good roads and clean energy,” Chafee said. “That’s not conservative, that’s not responsible and that’s not what this country needs.”
