An openly LGBT Republican in Michigan on Thursday condemned Republican National Committeeman Dave Agema for an anti-gay article he shared on Facebook

Luke Londo — a member of the Michigan Republican Party’s First District Executive Committee and secretary for the Marquette County Republican Party — penned an essay calling Agema’s actions offensive.

“As the only openly-LGBT member of the Michigan Republican Party’s First District Executive Committee, and perhaps the only openly-LGBT Republican elected to party office in Michigan, I was extremely offended by Agema’s post, and subsequent defense of it saying it has a place in discussion of same-sex marriage,” Londo wrote. “As a prominent official, Mr. Agema helped reinforce some ugly stereotypes of Republicans. However, I cannot sit idly by and be complicit in his ignorance.”

Londo added that he is “sorry” for Agema and called for “more thoughtful discussion” from party leaders. “There are plenty of legitimate points of contention on both sides of the marriage debate, but Mr. Agema has dragged intellectual discourse into the mud,” Londo wrote.

Agema posted an articled Wednesday on Facebook that decried the lifestyle of homosexuals as “filthy.” He has since faced calls for his resignation from Republicans in the state. Agema said in a statement Thursday that some people took the words of the article for his own, adding that the article was worth sharing given the gay rights cases before the Supreme Court this week.
