After hearing that a Colorado high school principal barred a student from giving his valedictorian speech that would reveal the student was gay, Larry Wilmore concocted a plan.
The host of “The Nightly Show” flew Evan Young of Twin Peaks Charter Academy High School to his New York studio to let Young deliver the speech on live television.
Watch the speech:
Cute kid, and very brave. It warms my heart that this teenager seems to have more class, tact, and balls than the adults that ostensibly are charged with molding his, and other kids’ characters at his school. Not bad one liners either. And quoting Vera Lynn was a nice touch. Bravo. Kudos to Wilmore for standing up for this young man too.
Larry Wilmore, that was great! Thank you so much for having Evan on the show. Even seems like such a sweetie and someone I’d have made fast friends with in my high school. Thank you!!
When this story came out originally, I contrarily agreed with the principal. I understood that the whole speech was about his coming out and argued that valedictories were not place for self-centered soliloquies, and that he was making the speech all about him, rather than his class. I still feel that way about those me-me-me speeches.
But I was completely wrong here.
The excerpt of the speech I heard was inclusive, witty, and elegant. His coming out was just a small, but critical part and completely appropriate in context.
The principal should have let him speak every word of it. It was a great valedictory.
I’ll be watching tonight, but I’m not sure Wilmore should have put ‘Ass’ in that slogan.
The principal of the school is probably beginning to feel…idk…stupid right about now. Had he let the speach go as it was all of this would have blown over.
I do hope that the kid gets a job as a comedy writer later on, though.
But…I kind of felt ick during the panel discussion…
