Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) has maintained a small lead over her Republican challenger, Rep. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, according to a new CNN/ORC International poll released Sunday.

In the open primary, in which nine candidates are running, 43 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Landrieu and 40 percent said they would support Cassidy.

The polling in the Louisiana Senate race has showed both top candidates fluctuating. According to TPM’s Polltracker tool, polls have shown both Landrieu and Cassidy in the lead at different times. The Polltracker average shows Landrieu with a 1.7 point lead over Cassidy in the open primary.

However, the race will likely result in an open primary in December between Landrieu and Cassidy. The CNN poll found that just between Landrieu and Cassidy, 50 percent of likely voters supported Cassidy while just 47 percent said they would vote for Landrieu in a runoff.

According to TPM’s Polltracker average, Cassidy has an 8.7 point lead over Landrieu in a runoff between the two candidates.

CNN/ORC surveyed 1,013 adults by phone Sept. 22-25 with a margin of error plus or minus 3 percentage points.
