Bill Kristol, the Weekly Standard editor known for making incorrect predictions, said Tuesday that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) could make a last ditch attempt to boost his presidential campaign this week by naming Carly Fiorina as his running mate.

In an appearance on MSNBC, Kristol asserted that Cruz “still has a chance” to win the nomination before launching into his theory about the Texas senator’s final attempt to convince Republican voters that he should be the nominee.

“I think what Cruz’s last Hail Mary attempt will be — I think he’d like to do this, I’m not sure he’ll pull it off — is to name a vice presidential pick this week, maybe as early as tomorrow,” he said, arguing that such a move would “galvanize” voters.

“I think he would like to ask Carly Fiorina to join him on the ticket. I know she’s being vetted,” he continued. “Her own people have confirmed that, and I think the Cruz campaign hasn’t denied it.”

Kristol then said that he thinks the pair would make for a strong ticket.

“We could be looking at a situation Thursday with Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina in Indiana saying, ‘This is the ticket. Donald Trump, who’s your running mate?’ and asking Republican voters to kind of come to their senses,” he told MSNBC. “Isn’t that a pretty attractive ticket? A very able, intelligent, young senator and a businesswoman of real distinction, who really won a lot of respect from Republicans during the debates.”

After delivering the bold prediction about Cruz, Kristol added that there’s a chance his hypothesis won’t be proven correct.

“So I think one thing that could still happen, I think could be a Cruz/Fiorina ticket, but maybe not,” he said.
