Fox News psychiatrist Keith Ablow said on Wednesday morning that President Obama’s effort to de-brand the U.S. has helped push teens to join the Islamic State.

Ablow said on “Fox and Friends” that people “without a sense of self” need something to “fill them up,” and turn to ISIL, according to a clip highlighted by Mediaite. Ablow then compared radical Islam to a drug.

“Think about crystal methamphetamine. The folks who use that are focused. They buy it, some of them make it. It isn’t easy. It’s dangerous,” he said. “It fills them up. It answers really tough nagging questions they have about whether life is worth living.”

Ablow suggested that some people lost their sense of self because the President “diluted” the American brand.

“When we de-branded America, and don’t forget this President took away the American brand,” Ablow said. “When we took away the notion of what it meant to be American, for some number of people, we took away a part of them, a sense of patriotism, forward momentum, and they are going to find it elsewhere. Our brand is being diluted, systematically and methodically, by this President.”

Ablow said that the U.S. needs to help people “grasp” their national identity “and not feel like they need to go elsewhere.”
